Contests - Royal Canadian Legion Public Speaking Competition

The Ontario Command of the Royal Canadian Legion is the largest service oriented organization in Ontario, which has 400+ branches throughout the province.

Its main focus is to remember those who gave their lives for freedom, to look after the needs of veterans, their dependants, and those still serving in the Canadian Forces. It also sponsors a variety of community programs such as sports, seniors programs, youth programs including an annual provincial- wide public speaking contest.

The goal of the Public Speaking Contest, part of the Legion's Youth and Education program, is to give young people an opportunity to speak in public.

Students are allowed to choose their own topics for the contest. A 3-5 minute original speech is required for all Grade 1 to 9 students and a 5-7 minute speech for all Grade 10-12 students. Competitors advance through Branch, Zone, District levels to the final Provincial Contest.

The contest is divided into 4 different divisions according to grade levels:
Grades 1-3,
Grades 4-6,
Grades 7-9
and grades 10-12.

The final Provincial Contest is held on the 1st Saturday in May each year.

Prizes for the provincial level:

Grades 1-3, $100 (Gold medal), $50 (Silver Medal)
Grades 4-6, $175 (Gold medal), $50 (Silver Medal)
Grades 7-9, $500 (Gold medal), $100 (Silver Medal)
Grades 10-12, $1000 (Gold medal), $200 (Silver Medal)

The winning student and one parent in each division from the 4 Legion Areas will be offered an all-expense paid trip to the site of the provincial finals.
Prizes for other levels depend on each level.

Eligibility:

Students in Ontario except those who have been out of the educational system for more than two years are eligible to participate.
