Gender Equality for men

Written In: Grade 9 | Year: 2016

Gender Equality
Have you ever seen a girl been hit by a man? If so how did you react? But if we were to flip the situation and a guy were to be hit by a girl, how would you react now? You always hear that women donít get paid equally to men or that women are treated unfairly within their working environments. In the past decades gender equality policies have been surrounding mainly as a womenís issue. There have been many cases where women have been raped and sexually assaulted, men have been charged with large fines and even sent to prison. On the other hand women who have done the exact same crime have either been charged a small fine or nothing at all. When you hear the word gender equality you think about women and the word is only associated with women but men do experience the same problem within todays society

It is very rare that you hear on the news a man being raped or sexually assaulted. Iíve heard many stories where police have not attempted to investigate these sort of cases such as a boy aged 4 was raped as a child by his 15 year old cousin, his cousin performed various things such as oral sex and the use of toys. A few weeks later the boy told his mother and called the police. The police didnít even investigate, they said since it was a girl doing it to a guy, it was just an ďEXPERIMENTATIONĒ. Iíve also heard that men have made the right decision with a bad outcome. A man named Michael got into a fight with his girlfriend, she was being very aggressive and if he were to even be physical and bruise her he would be jailed instantly. Michael then called the police to fix the issue but the police asked if the girlfriend was ok and then left without doing anything. Physically yes, he could of have gotten away but he realised it wasn't worth going to jail over his girlfriend so he gave up and allowed her to do her thing.

Todays younger society is consumed by the stereotype that men have to be firm and not emotional and that men are always wanting sex and have to always do manly things such as working out, work in a physical job and always have to be strong. There has always been a double standard where men aren't allowed to enjoy shopping, do gymnastics or take a job in a female-dominate sectors and occupations. Men have been shamed for enjoying the same things that women do and are scared to accompany women on things such as massages for they will be judged by their piers as soft or gay.

There have been many feminist groups that are completely against men. The definition of feminism is that, women and men should have equal rights and opportunities. But more and more the years pass I see feminism has become a from of man-hating.

Equality in education is an important issue, as gender equality guidelines improve education for both men and women. The goal of providing better education for women does not mean neglecting or suppressing men.

There are young men suffering from mental illness, unable to ask for help for fear it would make them less of a man, suicide is the biggest killer of men between 20 to 49. Iíve seen men made fragile and insecure by a distorted sense of what constitutes male success. Men donít have the benefits of equality, either. We donít often talk about men being imprisoned by gender stereotypes but I can see that they are. Men should feel free to be sensitive and strong.

Young men have changed enormously and what to have lives that are animated by terrific relationships with their children. They expect their partners, their spouses, their wives, to work outside the home and be just committed to their careers as they are. Younger men today expect to able to balance work and family with their partners. It is proven by doctors that men who do housework and childcare, they become more healthier. They smoke less, drink less, take recreational drugs less often. They are less likely to see a therapist, less likely to be diagnosed with depression, less likely to be taking prescription medication. So when men do housework and childcare, the men are healthier and happier.

When thinking about gender equality don't just associate the word with women but start to think how men are experiencing the exact same problems and someday in the future everyone will have equal rights and every situation will be assessed accordingly no matter the gender and people deserve equal rights and opportunities.
